Anaesthesiologist Career
Your future in an Anaesthesiologist Career
Anaesthesiologists are medical doctors who specialize in giving patients anesthesia. Anesthesia is only given to patients
who undergo surgery to relieve pain or to put these patients to sleep for the duration of the surgery. An anaesthesiologist
provides care to their patient before, during and after a surgery.
An anaesthesiologist career starts off with a 4 to 5 year degree program continued with doctoral training and followed by
another 4 years of residency. The primary role of an anesthesiologist in the operating room is to ensure that the patient
is in comfort during surgery. An anesthesiologist monitors a patients’ vital functions like the heart rate, breathing and
blood pressure and regulates anesthesia at all times of the surgery to ensure it maintains at the same level as before the
surgery. If there are any medical problems that arise during surgery, anesthesiologists are the ones that immediately
respond, diagnose and treat it.
More often than not, patients that need surgery have other medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure
and heart and breathing problems. It is the anesthesiologist job to conduct a pre-operation or pre-surgery evaluation and
examination so that he or she will be alert and be well prepared to treat them during and after surgery. An anesthesiologist
career is not only confined to the operation room as it extends to intensive care units, during childbirth, pain management
as well as respond to emergencies in the hospital and teach and train medical interns and residents.
Typical duties of an anesthesiologist include reviewing comments of other physicians and discussing with other doctors and
nurses on the sedation plan of the patient, interview and examine patients, advice the patient as well as the family on what
to expect before, during and after the surgery. Some surgeries do not require the patient to be on heavy sedation and during
this time, it is the anesthetist job to talk to the patient to keep them awake, whilst still keeping an eye on their vital
signs.
A key criteria in an anesthesiologist career is to have high levels of alertness and be meticulous. This is to make sure that
the anesthetist responds to sudden and frequent changes in a patient’s vital signs and give prompt and quick treatment during
surgery. An anesthesiologist also needs to make quick decisions during a surgery as the main goal for the anesthesiologist
is to make the patient comfortable, and most importantly-alive and breathing. Years of training, intelligence and perseverance
help the anesthesiologist in going through long hours of surgery as well as being able to work under highly stressful
conditions when there is a lot of uncertainty that could happen at the operation table.
An anaesthesiologist career is very competitive and highly stressful, that is why it is important for them to set daily tasks
and goals with less or no consultation from their superior first. Benefits and career satisfaction from being an
anesthesiologist are good and salary wise, an anesthesiologist can expect to be paid $268,405 annually.
Anesthesiologists also publish books on their findings and continuously research new and better ways to treat patients.
